I have four monster trucks. I bought my first one because I’m familiar with TB quality and reviews saying how handy they are. When I bought it, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it. Another tote? Really? Soon after my first monster truck I bought another, and another, and another.
I use them for *everything*. It’s my best grocery bag. The grocery clerks always comment on how simple and effective the design is.
It’s my best car bag. Everyone in the house (including the dog) gets a bag. You can pack whatever you want, but it must fit in the bag. The MT size and shape means it fits perfectly behind seats/on the floor, and they all pack perfectly in the back of my Outback (with room to spare) without obstructing my view. If you have other TB bags, you might know what I mean. The MT also packs in the car well alongside the Aeronaut.
I used to use LL Bean totes for this purpose, but the lower weight, cut of the top of the MT (hide under the arm, lower on the outside so you can grab things), compartments, and structured but flexible MT material are far superior.
It’s also my casual go-bag. To the park? MT. To the dog wash station? MT. Sleepover? MT.
Unlike others, I don’t find the MT is too big. Sometimes I don’t fill it up all the way, but more often than not, I use the space — especially at the grocery store. In fact, I bought and returned the classic truck in favor of the MT.

This thing is cavernous albeit an admittedly overbuilt grocery getter —but it solves a lot of problems.
First of all, it’s nigh impossible to tip over. Load it up - even illogically - and it refuses to let you down. Smash a corner with the groceries in the back hatch because you forgot they are back there for a fleeting moment - nope. Reliably secure.
Second, it’s designed in such a way that is deceptively brilliant. Right when you think you’ve reached its limit - a small adjustment allows still more items.
Third, with rare exception you buy a few of these you’re never opting for plastic or paper bags ever again. I would be surprised if this bag - in my use case - didn’t outlast me ;).
In the end, it looks expensive. Use it - and you will realize it’s a bargain.

The issue with most large bags is that they can never be loaded without being mound of stuff in the middle. Having the bag split into three parts allows the load be split to even it out and protect fragile items. It is very easy to overload it but when it is heavily loaded I carry it otherwise my wife can manage it.

I don’t usually buy products based on other people’s input, especially total strangers. But when I saw the Monster Truck model in NY Times Wirecutter - which I do trust implicitly – I couldn’t resist the urge to buy two for two very important women in my life. Not only did they both love the bag, they are reading like the journalist who reviewed it. You can overstuff it with pretty much anything (loose snacks, 2 beach towels, a bottle of wine, a couple of books, tanning lotion, a portable radio, a first aid kit, sunglasses), and hit the beach with your hands free. It not only handles the job, you look like a native beach bum who knows how to shoreline picnic with the pros. I’ve already bought another one, knowing it will win equal praise. Well done, Tom Bihn. I’ll bag up with you any day.
