The optional Internal Frame adds more structure to your Aeronaut when carrying heavy loads. A Frame Sheet adds rigidity to the back panel, which prevents overstuffed bags from barrelling out against your back and redistributing weight onto your hips for a more comfortable carry. Our frames come pre-bent to a generic spinal curve, but we recommend you re-bend and/or adjust the curvature to best fit your own back.

Benefits of an Internal Frame

On bags with a webbing or padded hip belt, the vertical stability facilitated by an internal frame with an aluminum stay can help to lift some of the pack’s weight onto one's hips.
It creates a hard back panel that prevents less-than-carefully packed objects like a thermos or DSLR from poking one in the back.
It can prevent an overstuffed bag from barreling out against one's back.
To some folks, a rigid frame against their back (with padding between the frame and their pack) just feels right.

Why You Might not Want to Use a Frame

A frame adds weight to a bag. Our Aeronaut 45 Internal Frame weighs 9.9 ounces / 280 grams and our Aeronaut 30 Internal Frame weighs 8.6 ounces / 245 grams. In many cases, you can forego the frame and achieve similar benefits with careful and thoughtful packing: carry less stuff, carry lighter stuff, and arrange it all carefully so it doesn’t poke into your back.
Soft luggage has myriad advantages over rigid luggage, and an internal frame converts the Aeronaut into a bag that's somewhere in-between soft and rigid luggage. The rigidity offered by the internal frame could become a liability when you’re squeezing your pack into the baggage sizer, in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you. That's a reason it's nice to be able to remove the internal frame when you want to.
Some folks simply prefer the feeling of a frameless or soft-back pack.

Great for other packs!
I used this to replace the frame sheet on my Evergoods CTB and it went from being borderline unusable to comfortable. Great quality and ergonomics in this frame sheet!

Great frame, but...
Let me start by saying I love Tom Bihn products overall and own several bags ranging from everyday backpacks to shoulder slings.
Regarding the frame itself, it looks sturdy and useful. And according to other reviews online, they really help support the Aeronaut bags when used in the backpack configuration.
Unfortunately, I bought a second-hand Aeronaut 45 bag on eBay, but it looks like the seller misled me and sent an Aeronaut 35. That sucks on its own, but it also brings me to my second point. I wish Tom Bihn would do a better job of labeling which version of the bag each one is (e.g., bag name/model and version/release) so it's easier to tell which accessories will work with them. If aesthetics is an issue, maybe just put a label inside with this info. That would've helped me properly identify the bag and send it back, knowing it was the wrong one.
I suppose we can try to measure the bag to determine which version it is, but when it's used and stretched out, it's very difficult to measure accurately.
As it stands, I have the wrong Tom Bihn bag, and then I purchased an internal frame that doesn't fit. Which is a double bummer.
If I get a Golden Ticket, I'll use it to get the bag I originally wanted and upload an updated review to share how the frame actually fits/works.

Bought for a different backpack, but works well!
I bought this to replace the frame sheet of a different branded backpack as I was having issues with the bottom of the bag digging into my lower back. The aeronaut frame sheet did the trick and works like a charm in the bag.

I bought one of these to put into a frameless backpack. The size was perfect and being able to modify the stay shape is a great option. It helps make sure the pack is comfortable, regardless of what I have in it.
