So far, all this is what you might expect from a TOM BIHN grocery bag.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut the Moveable Feast goes above and beyond when it comes time to bag your groceries at the checkout, or as you wander through the farmer's market. Outside, a front and a back pocket are good for your shopping lists or recipes, and will certainly keep chocolate bars safe and\/or handy. But that's only the beginning: inside, the Moveable Feast is divided and compartmentalized to make loading intuitive, and to keep your groceries upright: no longer must you accept a pile of food drifting higgledy-piggledy within the confines of a simple bag.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe main space of the Moveable Feast is divided into three large compartments: a center compartment and two end compartments. The center compartment is good for boxes of cereal and other dry goods, and also contains two vertical stretch mesh sleeves that keep your wine bottle or baguette upright and safe—they collapse nicely and out of the way if you're not using them. Both end compartments are the same size and can easily accommodate a half-gallon of milk and more. Against one of the main dividers is a specially designed, tapered scabbard: slide a bouquet of flowers into this pocket and you needn't worry about them falling over on the way home. The lower reaches of the other end compartment handle canned goods, frozen juice or other miscellany—after you've loaded that up, fold down the handy basket-shelf and safely cache tomatoes, avocados and other delicate items high and safe. (Tom calls this the \"anti-guacamole\" shelf: make guacamole on your schedule, not when your grocery bag has started the process for you.) The basket shelf folds out of the way when loading\/unloading the space below it, or if you're not going to use it this trip, magnets keep it folded up. If all this wasn't enough, the main compartment dividers are spaced perfectly to allow the dimples on the bottom of an egg carton—likely the last item to be loaded—to rest nicely atop your other groceries.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAll the specialized compartments feature graphic labels to jumpstart the bagging process: they're nice reminders for the user of the Moveable Feast, and provide visual cues for the bagger at checkout. Of course, the labels are just suggestions: you'll figure out what works best as you make the Moveable Feast your own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Moveable Feast is built with an exterior of US-made 1050 Ballsitic nylon, and is lined with 420 HT Parapack; both fabrics rinse out easily in your service or kitchen sink when the inevitable spill occurs. Three O-ring tether points for an organizer pouch or two, plus a key strap; padded Poron® foam handles, finished seams, and the usual TOM BIHN overkill, no-holds-barred sewing. Blah blah blah, you get the idea. Now get the bag.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Moveable Feast is probably not for everyone: it is intended for folks who buy groceries relatively often, and not in huge quantities. It is ideally suited for folks cooking for one, two, or perhaps three people. If you shop for a big family or only buy groceries once or twice a month, this bag may not be the right one for you. Key Straps are useful for keeping track of your keys (many folks leave their keys attached to the Key Strap) and can also be used to clip a pocket watch or Swiss Army knife to the bag. (Additional and extended-length Black and Color Key Straps can be purchased separately.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe main compartment unzips low on the sides, exposing a \"bellows\" that allows access to the depths of the bag. The front, back, bottom, and sides of the Empire Builder are padded and stiffened by 1\/4\" (6 mm) closed-cell foam to protect its contents and maintain its sharp looks. Inside the main compartment are three hard plastic file dividers (included with the bag) that make organizing your papers a snap. They also help to keep those important papers from getting damaged by the other contents in the main compartment. The dividers stay put inside the bag but are easily removed if you don't want them. You can order \u003ca href=\"\/products\/parts?variant=20023617799\"\u003e Extra File Dividers\u003c\/a\u003e for even greater organization.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlso in the main compartment are two unobtrusive webbing loops (that we call \"rail loops\") to which you can secure the optional \u003ca href=\"\/products\/cache\"\u003eCache\u003c\/a\u003e (available in sizes specifically for every Apple laptop and iPad; PC users, \u003ca href=\"#laptopfitguide\" class=\"tog2\"\u003eclick here for our Laptop Bag Fit Guide\u003c\/a\u003e). When you add the Cache, the Empire Builder becomes a \"checkpoint-friendly\" laptop briefcase. Here's how it works: on the back (or bottom, depending how you look at it) of the Cache are two parallel \"rails\" of 1\" wide lightweight nylon webbing which extend from the top to the bottom. Included (and already attached for your convenience) when the Cache is ordered with the Empire Builder are two Gatekeeper Rail Clips: unclip the side that isn't clipped to the Cache, slip it through the webbing loops in the Empire Builder middle compartment, and flip it shut. Slip the Cache inside the Empire Builder, and pull it back out: you'll see that the Gatekeeper Rail Clips ride the rails of the Cache, allowing you to remove your laptop from the Empire Builder entirely while it is still encased in the protective Cache. Doing this at the airport security checkpoint means the X-ray machines (and TSA personnel) will have a clear, unobstructed view of your laptop — allowing you to keep your laptop in the Cache and the whole affair securely held together as one unit. (We think that's much better than having to remove your laptop and dump it in one of those buckets.) Many of us will appreciate this functionality on a daily basis as well: the rail system can be a convenient and quick way to remove one's laptop from the bag.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe back of the Empire Builder features an open-top pocket for magazines or newspapers. It also has a slot that allows you to stack the bag on top of rolling luggage — slip the handle of the rolling luggage through the slot on the Empire Builder. The slot zips shut at the bottom so it can be used as a pocket when you're not using it to fit the bag on rolling luggage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDid we mention the handles yet? They are amazingly comfortable — constructed of U.S. made, 1050 denier, high tenacity ballistic nylon rolled around high quality, 1\/2\" thick PORON® foam; they lie naturally together at the top of the bag, so there's no fishing around for your grip. The Empire Builder can also be carried across-body or over the shoulder with the optional \u003ca href=\"\/products\/shoulder-straps?variant=16664457159\"\u003e Absolute Shoulder Strap\u003c\/a\u003e. The Absolute Shoulder Strap, which combines a soft, durable neoprene pad with comfortable stretch backing, has a unique internal control-stretch system that has given it a well-earned reputation as the best shoulder strap available. At the trailhead, Tom was considering whether to bring an extra jacket or not; Mark tucked the jacket back into Tom’s pack, noting that even if Tom didn't need the extra jacket, someone they ran into might. \u003cem\u003e “The life you save”\u003c\/em\u003e, said Mark, \u003cem\u003e“may not be your own”.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAfter that hike, Tom gradually compiled a kit that now includes, among other things, an extra headlamp, extra energy bars, and an extra pair of warm gloves and a hat—items that, while perhaps not life-saving, could mean the difference between a crummy hike and a comfortable descent to safety. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDiscussing the idea of Second Aid further with people here at the factory and our friends and family, we realized we could create Second Aid kits for travel, conferences, and just everyday life: into our Second Aid pouches went painkillers, extra pens, mints, chocolate bars, tea, instant coffee, cash, a small notepad, hand sanitizer. Anything, really, that we could think of that we could offer to a friend or stranger to make their day a little better. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere's some suggestions for what to pack in your Second Aid pouch:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eInexpensive headlamp and\/or flashlight: getting un-lost, providing first aid, searching for lost car keys or companions—they’re all harder (and even dangerous) in the dark. Don't cheap out too much on the headlamp—thinking you have one and finding it doesn't work is a big drag. Check the batteries regularly. If you can find one with a flashing red safety mode, so much the better. Remember that a headlamp can be held in one's hand, but a flashlight is hard to attach to one's head. Just saying.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThin glove liners: cold hands are no fun, but the diminished dexterity that comes along with icy digits can be incapacitating, turning an otherwise helpful person into a useless bystander.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eA very light-weight fleece cap can slow heat loss from one's head and can make a big difference in comfort and safety. A bicycle helmet liner (AKA \"skull cap\") works great. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNote: while we are all about having the very best of any piece of gear we own, we tend to buy cheap versions of the the above items, on sale when possible. You're likely to never see them again, and they might very well provide their utility in a one-time use. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlso, don't buy black stuff: drop your \u003cstrong\u003eblack\u003c\/strong\u003e gloves in the \u003cstrong\u003edark\u003c\/strong\u003e, on a windy mountain top, or on the floor of a parking garage, and they're \u003cstrong\u003egone\u003c\/strong\u003e; they’re also harder to find inside your pack or pouch. Bright colors are good, ok?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnward…  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eClif Bar or simulacra: some extra, easy-to-digest calories are always good to have, and can turn around a cranky, complaining child (of any age).\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eIbuprofen and\/or aspirin: the ability to relieve pain can turn you into an angel, and that's pretty cool. \u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eFoil-wrapped towelettes: not everyone will agree with this one, but getting cleaned up a bit can be a big attitude changer. Turn the Top Pack inside-out to transform it into a 10 liter daypack with 2\" \/ 50mm webbing shoulder straps, plus loops to attach the included 1\" \/ 25mm waist belt. The side of the daypack features a stretch mesh pocket for a small water bottle (up to about 3\" \/ 75mm in diameter) or umbrella; above the mesh pocket, you'll find a 1\" \/ 25mm triangle snap hook to attach your water bottle lid, umbrella strap, or what-have-you. The Top Pack has a 1.75\" \/ 45mm-wide front compartment that gives you 5 additional liters of room when used as a shoulder bag or waist pack; this compartment ends up on the \u003ci\u003einside\u003c\/i\u003e of the Top Pack when it's in daypack mode, and also gets squeezed down to almost nothing when the Top Pack is zipped onto the main bag (you've been forewarned). Optional side pockets attach over the compression straps. Stow them inside the main pack until you're ready to hike, as they make the Hero's Journey too big for carry-on flight. While on first blush the Luminary 12 appears to have a single compartment, its long zipper with four sliders actually accesses the main compartment as well as two side pockets. Both side pockets are sized generously to fit most smart phones; one side pocket is a little taller than the other (some functional asymmetry that we found beguiling aesthetically) and that pocket can even fit iPhone XS, i\u003cspan\u003ePhone Plus and or the HTC U Ultra.\u003c\/span\u003e The side pockets have O-rings so you can tether keys, multi-tools, \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.tombihn.mom\/collections\/organizer-pouches\"\u003eOrganizer Pouches\u003c\/a\u003e, whatever.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHandy too is the largely inconspicuous zippered padded back pocket that is sized to fit a 10.5\" iPad Pro or similarly sized (or smaller) tablet. Your tablet is protected by the 1\/4” \/ 6mm foam back padding, yet is easy to access via the vertical zipper. Inside the main compartment is a zip-away stretch mesh water bottle pocket\/divider: when zipped into place, the divider creates three vertical spaces to help you organize your gear and control the load. If that’s not your idea of a good time, leave the divider unzipped and push it out of the way.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe shoulder straps are gracefully curved and feature soft knit edges and undersides; they are padded with 5\/16” \/ 8mm thick EV50 closed-cell foam. They may be the most comfortable shoulder straps ever. The top handle\/grab loop is new too: made with our soft webbing that's easy on the digits but isn't padded or bulky. If you let out the straps and wear the Luminary 12 low on your back, the padded portion of the straps won’t be adequately long, and the adjusting buckles will likely poke you in the wrong place. That compartment closes with a magnet — handy for quick access to that suddenly vibrating or  ringing (or pika-chirping, in Barb’s case) phone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat magnet isn’t the only thing keeping your phone safely nestled and secure in the P.I.K.A. — the interior of that main phone compartment is fully lined with a directionally napped fabric similar to what's used on climbing skins for skis.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur \"One-Way Fabric\" feels a bit like soft corduroy (without the wales), but the “nap” or surface fibers fall in one direction, so that you can slide your hand over it one way and it feels smooth, but in the opposite direction it feels grippy and rough. As oriented inside our P.I.K.A. pouch, one’s phone or other small device will slide easily in, but resists sliding back out. You can slide your fingers inside and pinch your phone and remove it easy enough, but otherwise it’ll tend to stay put.
