I don't know if you really need the frame if you carry a laptop in the Techonaut. But it definitely helped when I was carrying no laptop.

I know TB said in their testing, this was not needed, but I use my Techo-30 as kind of a daily. I get groceries, and run errands with it a lot. When the bag is empty, or not fully at capacity, it can get on the floppy side without this. Though I wish it were still more rigid.

There's not much to say with this internal frame, but it's not as rigid or firm as I thought it would be. The Techonaut 45 is large when compared to the rest of the product line but I've found that it's also floppy and loose if it isn't filled up with clothes or items. I hoped that this frame would help with that, but that's on me.
When I added the frame to the Techonaut, it conformed to my back but it didn't straighten out the backpack. This is on me though, because I don't think that's what it was intended for. So functionally, the frame works as expected. Might not be needed but any support I can get is always appreciated.

While it isn't mandatory for the Techonaut, I would highly recommend getting the internal frame. I find it makes the bag more comfortable and provides good structure for the bag even when you don't have a laptop in it.
